Night City Wiki

Guides for every part of life in the city.

Vehicle Keys

Every owned car has a Car Key Fob with its plate on it. Whoever carries the fob can open and start the car, so keep it safe. You get your first fob free when you buy a car or take it out of the garage for the first time.

KeyWhat it does
LTap: lock / unlock the nearest car you have keys for
L (hold)Open the key fob screen (or My Keys if none of your cars is near)
GEngine on / off in the driver seat

You can change these in the game settings (Key Bindings → FiveM).

The key fob screen

Hold L near your car, or use the fob from your inventory. The fob works up to 30 m away:

  • Lock / Unlock: the lights flash and the car chirps.
  • Trunk: open or close the boot.
  • Engine: remote start.
  • Panic: sets the alarm off (press again to stop it).
  • Auto-lock when walking away: your car locks itself once you walk away from it. Each player can turn it on or off.

Locksmiths

City locksmiths are on the map. Player-owned locksmith shops set their own prices. Only the registered owner can order work on a car.

  • Cut key: a spare fob for your car. The price depends on the car's class (D is cheapest, S the most expensive).
  • Change locks: every old fob stops working, including lost and stolen ones, and you get one new fob. If you lost your key, this is the fix.
  • Alarms: fit an alarm while the car is parked outside.
  • Shop: lockpicks and alarm kits.

Selling or transferring a car changes its locks automatically, so the old owner's fobs stop working.

Car alarms

TierWhat it does
1Loud siren when someone breaks in
2Siren + a phone alert to you
3Siren, phone alert and a GPS ping of the car on your map. Also harder to pick

Locksmiths fit them at the counter. Mechanics and locksmith staff can also fit an alarm kit by looking at the car.

Job vehicles

Police cars, ambulances, tow trucks, garbage trucks and other work vehicles have no fob. Everyone on duty in that job can lock, unlock and drive them.

Cars without keys

Without keys a car won't start. Breaking into cars, hotwiring them and carjacking are crimes, and police may get a call about it. Some parked cars are unlocked, many aren't. A pick, a crowbar, a gunshot at the lock or a smashed window gets a door open (see Lockpicking), and H in the driver seat tries to hotwire the car (see Hotwiring). Better cars have harder locks: D and C class are Easy, B and A are Medium, and S class is Hard (advanced pick set only). A tier 3 alarm makes the lock one step harder. What criminals do with stolen cars is covered in Chop Shops.

Staff can move or turn off the city locksmith clerks in F9 → World Spawns.
