Recycling
Sort trash bags into materials at the La Mesa recycling plant and return empty bottles and cans at any 24/7 for cash.
Trash is worth something. There are two ways to turn it into money and materials:
- Recycling plant - sort
Trash Bags into crafting materials at the plant in La Mesa.
- Bottle and can deposit - return
Empty Bottles and
Tin Cans at any 24/7 store for cash.
Together with Dumpster Diving it's an easy way for a new character to earn pocket money.
Before you begin
- Nothing - every new character can do this.
- For the plant: some
Trash Bags (from a Garbage Collector route or from searching bins).
- For the deposit: empty bottles or tin cans in your pockets.
Recycling plant
- Go to the Recycling plant in La Mesa (map blip).
- Walk into the yard until [E] Sort trash bags shows.
- Press E. You sort up to 10 bags at a time - a progress bar runs, a couple of seconds per bag.
- Each bag gives you two materials from this list, plus a few dollars:
These are the same materials crafting and mechanics use, so you can use them, sell them, or fill a business's request on the supply board.
Bottle and can deposit
- Go to any 24/7 store and stand at the counter. Some stores have a deposit machine outside instead - use that one.
- [E] Return bottles & cans shows when you carry some.
- Press E. All your empty bottles and tin cans are taken and paid in cash.
Bin bags on the ground and trash cans near 24/7 stores are full of bottles and cans. A quick dumpster round followed by a stop at the 24/7 is easy money for a new character.
Costs & rewards
| What | Pays |
|---|---|
| Each trash bag sorted | 2 materials + $5 |
| Empty bottle | $3 |
| Tin can | $2 |
Common problems
- No [E] at the plant - walk further into the yard, and make sure you carry at least one trash bag.
- Only 10 bags were sorted - that's the most per run. Press E again for the rest.
- No return prompt at the 24/7 - that store has a deposit machine outside; use it instead of the counter.
- Your pockets are full - make room before sorting, the materials need space.
