Running the DMV
Own or work at the city's DMV - set the fees, place the stations and examine road tests as a player examiner.
The DMV in Vespucci Canals is a player-owned business. Every fee players pay there goes into the business account: exams, road tests, registration, insurance, claims, plates, cards and title transfers. The owner sets the prices, and examiners ride along on road tests.
The DMV never closes. The counter clerk is an NPC, so players can always do their paperwork. Road tests go to an NPC examiner when no player examiner takes them in time. Staffing the DMV adds roleplay and a human examiner, but the city keeps working without you.
This guide is for the owner and staff. Players getting a licence should read DMV & Driving Tests and Licenses.
Before you begin
- Owning it: businesses are handed out by staff. Ask in a Discord ticket. See Owning a Business.
- Working there: ask the owner or a manager to hire you. See Employees & Hiring.
- Ranks: Clerk, Examiner, Senior examiner, Manager and Owner. Manager and Owner are boss ranks. The owner chooses which ranks may examine tests and which may change prices.
- You must be on duty to examine.
Setting prices
- Business menu → DMV tab.
- Change any fee. Each one shows "allowed $X - $Y · city default $Z".
- Press Save prices. Anything outside the allowed range is moved back inside it.
- City default prices resets everything.
| Group | Fees |
|---|---|
| Licences | Learner's permit, written and practical for every car and motorcycle class, CDL, pilot, boat |
| Registration | Per vehicle class |
| Insurance | Liability and full coverage per class |
| Claim deductible | Per class |
| Counter services | Renewal, replacement card, photo retake, ID card, vanity plate, replacement plate, history report, title transfer fee, defensive driving course |
Placing the stations
A new DMV comes with a default layout inside the building. The owner can move, add or delete stations on the office computer → Locations: stand where the E should be and save. Stations are floating [E] texts with no props.
| Station | Needed? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DMV clerk | Needed | The NPC clerk stands here facing customers. The map blip follows the clerk |
| Exam computer | Needed | Place several so more people can sit exams at once |
| Licence photo camera | Needed | Stand where the customer stands for the photo |
| Examiner desk | Needed | Only on-duty examiners see it |
| Test vehicle spot | Needed | On the road outside, facing the exit. Test cars, bikes, the CDL bus and the truck appear here |
| CDL reversing bay | Optional | Middle of the bay, facing out. Without it the CDL test skips reversing |
| Pilot test helipad | Optional | Can be anywhere, such as an airport pad |
| Boat test dock | Optional | On the water at any dock |
Examining a road test
- Go on duty.
- When a player books a road test, every on-duty examiner gets a notification and a sound: "Road test waiting".
- Go to the examiner desk and press E at "Examiner desk (road tests)". The queue shows each candidate, the test and how long until the NPC takes it. Press Accept before the timer runs out.
- Follow the blip to the test vehicle and get in the passenger seat. The test only starts once you are seated.
- The EXAMINING panel shows the driver's live speed and limit, speeding strikes, seatbelt, damage, checkpoint, time left and the directions they get.
- If they do something the game doesn't catch (running a red light, dangerous driving, ignoring directions), type
/dmvfail, write the reason and press Fail the test. You can bind a key to it under "DMV examiner: fail the test" in your keybind settings. - At the end you get a message saying whether they passed or failed.
You can examine one test at a time, and never your own. You cannot pass a test: the game passes it when the route is finished cleanly, and the game's own fails always stand. The fail reason is saved on the driver's record, so always give a real one.
Front desk roleplay
The counter is automated, but a player clerk makes the DMV feel alive:
- Explain the steps: permit, photo, written exam, then road test.
- Help people read their checklist in the Licences tab.
- Explain registration and insurance, and point buyers to a history report before a title transfer.
- Call an examiner when someone books a road test.
Costs & rewards
- Every DMV fee goes into the business account, including when the NPC clerk or NPC examiner handles it.
- Title transfers: a 5% sales tax set by the city is added and also goes to the business, along with your transfer fee.
- A booked road test waits about 2 minutes for a player examiner before the NPC takes it.
Common problems
- The examiner desk isn't there - you are not on duty, or the Examiner desk station hasn't been placed.
- The test went to the NPC - nobody pressed Accept in time. Keep someone near the desk when it's busy.
- The test won't start - you have to sit in the test vehicle's passenger seat first.
- Can't accept a test - you already have one running, or it's your own test.
- Players can't use part of the DMV - a needed station is missing. Check the Stations list on the DMV tab.
- CDL test has no reversing, or no pilot / boat test - place the CDL bay, helipad and dock.
Thanks! Staff will look at it.
