Apartment Break-ins

How burglars pick their way into Tinsel Towers apartments, what tenants see, and how police warrant raids work.

Drugs & Crime3 min read

Apartments at Tinsel Towers are private, but two kinds of people can get in without being invited: burglars, who pick the lock from the lobby elevators, and police with a search warrant.

A successful break-in lets you raid the tenant's stash - but it also sets off the burglar alarm, and the front doors are the only way in and out. For everyday apartment life, see apartments.

Before you begin

1

Breaking in

  1. Press E at a lobby elevator.
  2. Select a unit in the Residents list on the right.
  3. Press Pick the lock (only shown while you carry a lockpick) and play the lockpick minigame.
  4. Win and you are inside. Open the stash and take what you want. You can't use the wardrobe or touch the furniture.
  5. Leave through the front door like anyone else - you come out of an elevator in the lobby.

Fail and the lock holds. Your lockpick might snap, and someone may still report the noise.

What makes it harder

  • Bigger apartments have tougher locks - a studio is easiest, a penthouse hardest.
  • An advanced lockpick makes any lock a little easier.
  • After any attempt on a unit, building security watches that lock for a while.

What happens when you get in

  • The tenant gets an alarm alert (if online) and a mail on their phone.
  • Anyone already inside hears the lock click.
  • Police get a "Burglar alarm" call pointing at the Tinsel Towers front doors.
  • The building's security log records the break-in and the stash being opened.

The alarm sends police to the front doors - the only way out. The longer you stay upstairs, the more likely officers are waiting in the lobby.

Smart burglars do their homework in RP first. The Residents list shows who lives where and how big their place is, and a tenant who is out in the city can't hear the lock click. Think about who you're robbing, how long you'll be inside and how you'll get out with the goods.

For tenants

  • No lock is unpickable - don't keep everything in one place.
  • Watch your phone: the alarm mail tells you the unit and that police were called.
  • Being at home helps - you'll know the moment someone comes in.
  • Only give spare keys to people you trust; a key holder doesn't need a lockpick.
5

Police raids

  1. An on-duty officer with an active search warrant (or subpoena) for the tenant presses E at an elevator and selects the unit.
  2. They press Enter with warrant and arrive inside.
  3. They press E at the stash to Search the stash for evidence.
  4. Anyone inside sees "POLICE! Officers just came through the door", the tenant gets a mail, and the raid goes in the security log.

Common problems

  • No "Pick the lock" button - you don't carry a lockpick.
  • I can't try that unit - security is watching that lock after a recent attempt. Wait for things to calm down.
  • I can't pick my own apartment - use your key.
  • My lockpick broke - it can snap on a failed attempt. Bring spares.
  • "Get a warrant in the MDT first" (police) - there is no active warrant for that tenant.
