Growing Weed
Find a hidden weed patch, keep it watered, fed and bug-free, take cuttings and harvest graded buds.
You can't buy seeds and plant a farm in your garden. Weed grows in hidden patches out in the wild. Each patch starts with one mother plant, and a healthy patch slowly spreads new plants around it. Your job is to find a patch, look after it and harvest it - before somebody else does.
Patches are shared: anyone who finds one can work it. There is no owner and no lock.
Every patch has one strain, and cuttings keep it:
| Strain | In short |
|---|---|
| Neon Haze | The all-rounder |
| Chrome Kush | A bit slower, better quality |
| Midnight Static | Fast and generous, rougher quality |
| Velvet Riot | Slow and fussy, the best quality |
Before you begin
- A
Darkweb Tablet to read the tips that lead you to patches (see The Darkweb).
Watering Can - several pours per fill, sold empty at the hardware store. A
Bottle of Water works as a smaller pour.
Plant Fertilizer - fertilizer from the hardware store.
Soap Spray - kills aphids, from the hardware store.
Pesticide - kills spider mites, found in bins and construction skips.
Finding a patch
- Carry a
Darkweb Tablet. New patches are announced on the dark web by the handle greenthumb.
- The first tip only names the kind of land and the area. If nobody finds it, sharper tips follow.
- Use
/dwhintsto catch up on open tips. - Watch the Tablet signal box (bottom right) - more bars means you are getting close.
Think about where weed could hide: quiet hillsides, forests, the edge of farmland, places far from the road. Plants are only drawn when you are fairly close, so walk the ground, listen for the flies around a bugged plant and look for tall, bushy shapes in the scrub.
Working a plant
- Walk up to a plant. [E] Inspect the plant appears over it.
- If there are several options, use Left / Right to cycle and E to pick. You only see options you can use right now.
| Option | When it shows |
|---|---|
| Harvest the buds | The plant is ripe |
| Inspect the plant | Always |
| Water it | You carry a filled watering can or a water bottle |
| Add fertilizer | You carry Plant Fertilizer |
| Use soap spray / Use pesticide | The plant has bugs and you carry the spray |
| Pick bugs off by hand | The plant has bugs |
| Take a cutting | The plant is budding or ripe |
Inspect shows the strain and stage, water, health, fertilizer, growth, any bugs with a hint on the fix, and whether it is healthy enough for a cutting.
Growth stages
| Stage | What you see |
|---|---|
| Seedling | A tiny plant |
| Growing | A medium plant |
| Budding | A fuller plant, buds are forming |
| Ripe | A big, bushy plant - ready to harvest |
| Wilted stump | Only the mother plant can end up like this |
Growing takes real time - plan to come back.
Water and fertilizer
- Plants dry out over time. The desert dries them faster; rain tops them up.
- Water it uses one pour from the can. Hover the can in your inventory to see the pours left. If the soil is soaked, nothing is used.
- Fill the can by using it from your inventory while standing at the edge of a lake, river or the sea (knee-deep is perfect).
- Add fertilizer fills the plant's food up. It lasts a long time and a fed plant heals faster.
Health is what everything comes down to: dry soil and bugs hurt the plant, good water and fertilizer heal it. The grade of your buds depends on how healthy the plant was while the buds grew, plus the strain.
Bugs
A clean plant sometimes gets bugs - you'll see flies buzzing around it. Leave them and they spread to the plants next to it. Inspect first: the wrong fix does nothing.
| Bug | What it looks like | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Aphids | Sticky leaves, tiny green dots underneath | |
| Spider mites | Fine webs, pale speckled spots | |
| Caterpillars | Chewed buds and droppings | Pick them off by hand - sprays don't work |
Picking by hand: a big letter (W, A, S or D) flashes up with a timer bar. Press it before the bar runs out, several rounds in a row. Miss too many and they get away - try again.
Harvesting
- When a plant is ripe, choose Harvest the buds.
- After a few seconds you get
Wet Weed Buds marked with the strain and grade. Healthier plants give more.
- The plant does not die - it drops back to budding and grows new buds.
- Take the wet buds to a weed table to dry - see Processing Weed.
The first harvest on a patch counts as finding it: the dark web tips stop and tablet holders hear that someone got there.
Cuttings and spreading
- Take a cutting from a budding or ripe plant to get a
Weed Cutting of the same strain. It costs the plant some health and needs time before the next one.
- Plant it by using the cutting while standing inside a patch, a little away from other plants and not in water. Outside a patch you keep the cutting.
- A patch with a healthy full-size plant also drops new seedlings by itself now and then, up to the patch's limit.
Neglect and the mother plant
If a patch is left dry and sick, the extra plants die off one by one. The mother plant never disappears - it wilts into a stump. Keep watering it and, once its health is back, it sprouts again. When a patch dies back to just the mother, it goes back into hiding and new tips start.
Costs & rewards
- Supplies cost a little at the hardware store; the pesticide you have to dig out of the trash.
- You earn graded wet buds every harvest, and the plant keeps producing as long as you look after it.
Common problems
- No "Water it" option - your can is empty. Fill it at the edge of a lake, river or the sea.
- The spray did nothing - wrong bug. Inspect first: aphids need soap spray, spider mites need pesticide, caterpillars must be picked by hand.
- My cutting won't plant - you must stand inside a patch, away from other plants and out of the water.
- I can't take a cutting - the plant must be budding or ripe and healthy enough, and needs a rest after the last cutting.
- My buds are low grade - the plant was thirsty, hungry or bugged while the buds grew.
Thanks! Staff will look at it.
