Timeline
The history of Night City in order. Where nobody knows the exact date, the entry says so.
Before Night City
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| Before 1984 | Los Santos is the largest city in the state of San Andreas. Its police, fire department and medical centers all carry the Los Santos name, and the Vinewood sign stands in the hills. See Before Night City. |
1984: The Founding
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| January 1, 1984 | Lorenzo Romano is shot and killed as he is sworn in as mayor of Los Santos. See Mayor Lorenzo Romano. |
| Early 1984 | Police identify the sniper, Winston Wilcox, and hunt him down. He disappears and is found dead in a sewer before he can be arrested. No one else is ever connected to the killing. See Winston Wilcox. |
| 1984 | Night City is founded when Los Santos is taken over by the Moretti family and branches off from the main city. The exact start is unknown; many link it to the assassination of Mayor Romano. See Chapter 1: The Founding (1984). |
| After the assassination | The Romano family is not seen again. |
| April 1, 1984 | The Moretti family destroys the Vinewood sign. |
| June 1, 1984 | The Night City sign is built in its place. |
The Years Without a Mayor
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| After 1984 | The city falls into anarchy with no mayor and a government in a poor state. Los Santos refuses to help, hoping Night City will die out. Instead it slowly starts to expand. See Chapter 2: The Years Without a Mayor (1984-2026). |
| 2015 | The visual change to Night City: the Police, Fire Department and Medical Center begin to wear the Night City name. |
| 2026 | The change to Night City is completed and made official. City Hall, the police stations and the fire stations keep their Los Santos signs; replacing them all would cost billions. |
Today
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| Today | Night City has still never elected a mayor. The Moretti family is waiting to trigger the first election. The Morettis also pressure businesses in Greywater County to pay Night City taxes and follow Night City laws. Some citizens still call the city Los Santos. |
