Fishing
Two ways to fish in Night City: grab a rod and fish anywhere with water, or sign on with Night City Fish Co. at the
Chumash pier and work the crab pots and nets from a boat for a paycheck.
Rod fishing (any time, no shift)
- Get a Fishing Rod and some bait - the fishmongers (Chumash pier and Del Perro Pier) sell both for cash.
- Stand on a shore, a pier or a boat deck and face the water.
- Use the rod from your inventory (or type
/fish). Your line goes out and a gold bobber floats on the water. - Wait for a bite. When the water splashes and the rod shakes, press E to strike - be quick.
- The fight: hold E (or left mouse) to reel, let go when the tension bar turns red. If it hits the end the line
snaps; if you stop reeling for too long the fish swims off. Fill the "Line in" bar to land it.
- After a catch press E to cast again or X to put the rod away. X also reels in while you wait.
Every fish has a species and a weight. Where you fish decides what bites:
| Spot | What bites |
|---|---|
| Pier / shore (sea) | Mackerel, striped bass, redfish, stingray |
| River (Zancudo, Raton Canyon, Cassidy Creek) | Trout, largemouth bass, catfish, salmon |
| Lake (Alamo Sea, Land Act Reservoir, Mirror Park) | Largemouth bass, catfish, trout |
| Deep sea (from a boat, far offshore) | Bluefin tuna, salmon, and the rare swordfish and mako shark |
Anywhere you can also pull up junk (old boots, tin cans) - and now and then a Sunken Chest. Use the chest from your
inventory to pry it open for cash and sometimes an old coin or a piece of jewellery.
Bait: worms bite faster in rivers and lakes, shrimp brings more rare fish at sea, a lure is reusable (you only lose
it when a fish breaks it off). One worm or shrimp is used per cast.
Licence: you can fish without a fishing licence, but the police can see it and fine you.
Tips: fish bite faster at dawn (5-8) and dusk (18-21) and in rain or fog. Your Fishing level makes bites come
faster and rare fish show up more often.
AFK fishing (the AFK Fishing Pier)
The end of Del Perro Pier is the AFK Fishing Pier (fish pin on the map). Lou sells bait and rods there and
Hank buys what you catch.
- Stand on the pier with a rod and bait (shrimp, worms or a lure) and face the water.
- Type
/autofish. Your line goes out and stays out. - A fish lands every 45-90 seconds. It goes into your AFK fish bucket, not your pockets, so it weighs nothing.
Each catch uses one worm or shrimp (a lure can snap off now and then). No sunken chests come up this way.
- While you AFK fish your hunger and thirst don't drop.
- It stops when you move, get hurt, leave the pier, press X or type
/autofishagain. It also stops
when you run out of bait or the bucket is full (60 fish).
- Every 30 minutes a "Still there?" prompt pops up. Press E within a minute or it stops.
The bucket: talk to Hank (or any fishmonger) and pick My AFK fish bucket. Sell the whole bucket, sell one
species, or Take fish into your pockets when you have room. AFK fish pay 70% of a normal catch, even after you
move them to your pockets. AFK catches don't count for the weekly biggest-fish contest or the city records.
Selling - the fish market
Talk to a fishmonger: Sell my catch, Today's prices, Buy tackle, Record board.
- A fish pays its species price at the average weight - heavier fish pay more.
- Prices change every day at midnight (the Prices tab shows today's ups and downs).
- Fish lose value every hour out of the water. A fish caught with an Ice Cooler on you keeps its full value.
- Biggest fish of the week wins a prize (top 3 paid on Sunday night). The record board also shows the all-time
heaviest fish of every species and who caught it.
Night City Fish Co. (the commercial shift)
- Talk to Captain Mae at the end of the Chumash pier and Start shift. Work clothes go on and your boat is at the berth.
- Sail to the fishing ground on your GPS (a gold circle on the map).
- Stop the boat inside the circle and go to the stern (back of the boat): [E] Drop a crab pot for every pot.
The skipper's first drop also drops the anchor - accelerate to raise it.
- Let the pots soak (the HUD counts down), then [E] Haul the crab pot at the stern with a skill check.
A good haul is 1-3 crates, a fumbled one only 1. The crates go in the hold.
- When every pot is hauled the ground is fished out and the next one shows on your GPS.
- When the hold is full (or whenever you like) sail back to the berth: [E] Unload the hold = paycheck.
- Back at the captain: Finish shift & get paid for the completion bonus.
From Fisherman some grounds use trawl nets instead: only two per ground, longer soak and two skill checks,
but 4-7 crates each. Weather matters: rain, fog and cloud bring more fish, storms and blazing sun fewer.
Pay: $9 per crate (before tier and VIP bonuses), overtime x1.5 past the shift target (40 crates solo, +60% per extra
crew member), $300 completion bonus. A solo Deckhand makes roughly $800-900 an hour.
Crew: up to 4 on one boat. Everyone can drop and haul; whoever unloads gets a little extra credit. Anyone who does
less than a quarter of the crew's average gets no cut of that unload.
Boats#
| Tier | Boat | Hold | Pots per ground |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deckhand, Angler (from Angler) | Dinghy, then Tropic speedboat | 16 / 24 crates | 4 / 5 |

Rewards shop (Angler Points)#
Water, coffee, worms, shrimp, lures, a spare rod, the Pro Carbon Rod (tension rises slower, longer strike window),
the Ice Cooler (catch never loses value), the Fish Finder (more crates per pot, faster bites) and work looks:
