Fake Plates
Make a fake plate at a chop shop, fit it to your own car to dodge plate checks - and know what it leaves behind.
A Fake Plate swaps your car's plate for a random made-up one. Run that plate and it comes back with no registration - nothing links it to you at first glance. The car underneath is still the same car, and it leaves a trail for anyone who looks closer.
Before you begin
- Mechanic level 8 (your character's mechanic skill - see Mechanic Job).
- A blank
License Plate, some
Plastic and a
Toolbox.
- Access to a chop shop (see Chop Shops - you have to find one first).
- A car registered to you to fit it on.
Making one
- Stand at the chop shop spot. The floating text shows [E] Strip the nearest car [G] Make a fake plate.
- Press G. A progress bar runs, then a hard skill check.
- Pass it and you get a clean-looking fake plate. The blank plate and plastic are used.
- Fail it and it "came out crooked" - you keep your materials, try again.
Fitting it
- Stand next to your own car.
- Use the Fake Plate from your inventory. The plate changes and your keys still work.
- To put the real plate back, stand by the car and type
/realplate.
- Fitting a fake plate is written into the car's history - police who look up your real plate in the MDT see "Fake plate fitted".
- A plate with no registration is suspicious in itself, and the VIN tells the truth whatever the plate says.
- Police treat a fake plate as contraband. Don't keep a spare in your pockets.
- If you sell the car, the history report shows a WARNING about the fake plate.
Blank plates don't grow on trees - keep your eyes open and ask around in RP. Put the real plate back before you pull into anywhere official; a fake plate helps against a quick check, not a proper stop.
Common problems
- "Need more mechanic skill" - you are below mechanic level 8.
- "It came out crooked" - you failed the skill check. Your materials are kept.
- It won't fit on this car - it only goes on a car registered to you.
- I want my real plate back - stand by the car and type
/realplate.
