Emotes

Dance, sit, hold props and react - the F3 menu, favourites wheel, shared and group emotes, walk styles, moods and emojis.

Emotes bring your character to life. There are hundreds of them: everyday actions, dances, emotes with props (coffee, phone, guitar...), emotes you do with another player, walk styles, facial moods and emoji bubbles above your head.

Most emotes are free for everyone. A few are locked behind a VIP tier, the battle pass, a Gem store pack or a job.

Before you begin

  • Nothing for most emotes - every character can use them.
  • Locked emotes show faded with a badge:

Opening the menu

  1. Tap F3 to open the emote menu on the right of your screen. You can also type /emotemenu or /emotes in chat.
  2. Pick a tab along the top - most have sub-tabs under them (for example Dances → Club, DJ...).

  1. Type in the search box to filter by name (for example wave or sit). Arrow keys move through the list and Enter plays the selected emote.
  2. Close the menu with Esc or the X.

Playing and stopping

  1. Click an emote once - Play, Group and Position buttons appear on that row.
  2. Click Play, or double-click the row to play it straight away.
  3. Press X to cancel the emote (any prop in your hand disappears). Press X again with nothing playing to put your hands up.

Other handy keys: K toggles ragdoll (press again to get up), U points and Left Ctrl crouches.

Favourites wheel

  1. Click the heart on any emote to add it to Favourites. Drag them in the Favourites tab to change the order.
  2. Your first 8 favourites go on the wheel.
  3. Hold F3, move the mouse onto an emote and let go of F3 to play it. Letting go in the middle plays nothing.

Favourites, your walk style and your mood are saved per character.

Shared emotes

Hugs, handshakes, high fives, carrying and more need a second player - and nobody can be forced into one.

  1. Stand right next to the other player.
  2. Pick an emote in the Shared tab and choose Ask nearest, or type it with /e (e.g. /e handshake).
  3. They see "Your Name wants to: Hug" and press Y to accept or N to decline. It times out after a few seconds.
  4. If either of you presses X, it stops for both. Carry lets you walk around with the other player - press X to put them down.

Group emotes

  1. Click any emote (dances work great) and press Group.
  2. Players close by get "Your Name invites you to join: Dance".
  3. Everyone who presses Y starts the same emote at the same moment, all in sync.

Positioning an emote

  1. Click an emote and press Position. A see-through copy of you appears.
  2. Move it with W A S D, turn it with Q / E, raise or lower it with R / F.
  3. Press Enter to move there and play the emote, or Backspace to cancel.

You can only move a short distance and not through walls. Great for sitting properly on benches, bar stools and beds.

Walk styles, moods and emojis

  • Walks - pick a style and the row shows ON. Pick Default walk to go back to normal.
  • Expressions → Moods - change your face (angry, happy, tired...). Normal face resets it.
  • Expressions → Emojis - click one and a bubble pops up above your head for a few seconds. Players who can see you see it too. Most are free; a few special ones need a VIP tier.

Common problems

  • F3 does nothing - check ESC → Settings → Key Bindings → FiveM → "Emotes: menu (tap) / favourites wheel (hold)". You can rebind it there.
  • "Not usable in a vehicle" - only emotes in the Vehicle sub-tab (under Emotes) work while seated in a car. Shared emotes never do.
  • "You are cuffed" / "Not now" - no emotes while cuffed, falling, swimming or ragdolled. Get back on your feet first.
  • Prop emote won't play - prop emotes are blocked while you aim, shoot or fist-fight.
  • "Stand next to someone first" / "Nobody close enough" - shared emotes need the other player right beside you.
  • "Something is in the way" / "Shared emotes can't be positioned" - Position can't go through walls, and only works for solo emotes while out of a vehicle.
