DMV & Driving Tests

Visit the DMV, get your learner's permit, pass written exams and live road tests, and get your licence and ID cards.

The DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) in Vespucci Canals is where you earn every licence. Look for the DMV blip on your map. First you get a learner's permit, then for each class you pass a written exam on a computer and a road test in the live city.

The DMV is a player-owned business, but it never closes for you:

  • The clerk at the counter is always an NPC, so the desk works 24/7.
  • When you book a road test, an on-duty player DMV examiner gets a couple of minutes to accept it and ride along. If nobody does, an NPC examiner takes your test.

Inside you will find these floating [E] spots:

SpotWhat it does
Clerk (NPC at the counter), "DMV services"Licence status, booking road tests, renewals, cards, ID, vehicle paperwork, your driving record
Exam computers, "Take a written exam"Every written exam: permit, licence classes, CDL, pilot, boat and the defensive driving quiz
Licence photoTakes the photo for your cards

Which licence you need for what is explained in Licenses. Registration and insurance are in Registration, Insurance & Titles.

Before you begin

  • Money in your bank (or cash if the bank is short) for each exam and test.
  • For each class, the checklist from Licenses: permit, time online, clean record, no retry wait.
  • A photo on file before you can get cards or ID.
1

Step 1: Learner's permit

  1. Go to an exam computer and press E.
  2. Pick Learner's permit and press Start. The fee is paid first.
  3. Answer the questions. Clicking an answer moves to the next one, and the numbered boxes at the top let you go back.
  4. Press Hand in. You need 80% to pass.
  5. Go to the Licence photo spot and press E. Your permit card (Drivers License) goes into your pockets.
2

Step 2: Check your checklist

  1. Talk to the clerk (E) and open the Licences tab.
  2. Every line for the next licence needs a green tick: permit, not suspended, clean record, hours online, licence not expired, no retry wait.
3

Step 3: Written exam

  1. Go to an exam computer and press E. You only see exams that are open to you. Locked ones show the reason in red.
  2. Press Start and pay. You get 15 questions and about 10 minutes.
  3. Hand in before time runs out. You need 80%.

A passed written exam stays valid for about two weeks. Book the road test before then.

Walking away from the computer or closing the exam window counts as a fail. You still pay, and you get the retry wait.

4

Step 4: Road test

  1. Clerk → Licences tab → Book practical test next to the licence, and pay.
  2. The clerk tells you if an NPC examiner takes it, or if a player examiner has a short time to accept.
  3. Follow the GPS to the test vehicle (plate DMVTEST) and get in the driver seat. With a player examiner, wait for them to sit in the passenger seat.
  4. Put your seatbelt on (B) before you drive off.
  5. Drive the GPS route and follow the directions shown as subtitles. The test panel on the right shows the checkpoint, your speed and the limit, speeding strikes, seatbelt, damage and time left.
  6. Drive back to the DMV, the last checkpoint. You see PASSED and a new licence card lands in your pockets.

Higher classes have more checkpoints and slightly higher limits. Class A and S end with a timed fast section. The test car matches the class, so a Class S test puts you in a supercar. The motorcycle test works the same way on a bike, without the seatbelt check.

What fails a road test

FaultResult
Speeding more than about 10 mph over the limit on the panelA strike. 3 strikes = fail
No seatbelt above walking speed (cars)Fail
Rolling through a full stop (panel shows STOP)Fail. Stop completely inside the checkpoint
Damaging the vehicle yourself (about 15%)Fail
Leaving the route, or getting out for more than a few secondsFail
Wrecking the vehicle, running out of time or leaving the cityFail
A player examiner fails you with a written reasonFail, saved on your record

If another player crashes into your test vehicle, the test is voided. Your next try at that test is free and has no wait.

6

CDL (commercial) test

  1. Bus route: at every bus stop, stop, press E to open the doors and wait until they close.
  2. Truck and trailer: back at the DMV you get a truck. Reverse onto the trailer to hook it, drive the route, then stop and hold H to unhook.
  3. Reversing bay: reverse into the coned bay, straight between the cones, and stop.

Driving into the bay forwards, knocking over 2 cones or taking too long fails.

7

Pilot and boat tests

  • Pilot: follow the GPS to the helipad, take off, fly through every ring, then land back on the pad and stop.
  • Boat: follow the GPS to the dock, sail between each pair of buoys, then come back to the dock and stop.
8

Defensive driving course

  1. Take the Defensive driving course (quiz) at an exam computer. You need at least one point on your record.
  2. Pass it, then clerk → Licences → Start the course drive.
  3. Drive the short route with the NPC examiner. Points come off your record when you pass.
9

Cards, ID and renewals

  • Replacement card: clerk → Services → Replacement card (needs a photo on file).
  • ID card: clerk → Services → Get an ID card gives you an ID Card with your DMV photo.
  • Renew: take a new photo the same day, then clerk → Services → Renew.
  • Use the licence card from your inventory to show it. It slides onto your screen and the screen of anyone right next to you.

You get a free new card every time you pass a test, renew or take a new photo.

Common problems

  • "Pass the written exam first" when booking - your written exam is missing or older than two weeks. Sit it again.
  • "Have your photo taken at the camera first" - cards and ID need a photo on file.
  • "Renewals need a new photo" - take a photo at the camera the same day, then renew.
  • "You already have a test booked" - finish it, or cancel it at the counter while it is still waiting. You get your money back.
  • My exam failed when I walked off - leaving the computer counts as a fail. Stay at the desk until you hand in.
  • The test vehicle didn't appear - the fee is refunded automatically. Open a ticket if it keeps happening.
