Mining

Break ore rocks at the Davis Quartz quarry, level up, upgrade your pickaxe, take contracts and blast boulders.

Jobs & Businesses7 min read

Mining is open to everyone. There is no job to sign up for and no clock-in - if you carry a mining tool, you can mine. You break shared ore rocks in the Davis Quartz pit (east of Sandy Shores), and the ore drops straight into your pockets as each rock breaks apart.

The full loop:

  • Mine ore rocks at the quarry (this guide).
  • Process the ore at the quarry yard, smelt it at the Cypress Foundry and sell it at the LS Metals Exchange - see Ore Processing.
  • Or keep the metal - the Iron, Copper and Steel you make are the same items mechanics and crafting benches use.

Type /mining any time to open your Mining book: your level and XP, what each level unlocks, every ore and tool, today's prices, your crew and your contract. Every place has a Waypoint button there.

Before you begin

  • A mining tool - start with a Pickaxe (Rusty Pickaxe, $350 at Mining Supply).
  • Nothing else. Every ore can be mined from level 1.
  • Optional: a few dollars for safety gear, a wheelbarrow or truck deposit.
  • Blasting only: mining level 30 and a blasting licence from the police.
1

Getting to the quarry

  1. Open the map and set a waypoint on the Davis Quartz Mining blip.
  2. Next to the pit you find the Mining Supply worker (tools, upgrades, repairs, safety gear, hauling, blasting), the Quarry Foreman (contracts), the Ore Processing tables and the Quarry truck parking.
  3. Walk up to a worker and press E to talk.

Mining tools only work inside the quarry.

2

Mining a rock

  1. Buy the Rusty Pickaxe at Mining Supply → Tools. It is the only tool the shop sells - every better tool is an upgrade of the one you own.
  2. Walk up to a rock until [E] Mine ... shows above it. The rock's glow and name tell you the ore.
  3. Press E. A bar appears with a green zone, a small gold centre and a moving needle.
  4. Press E when the needle is in the zone: gold centre = PERFECT (one and a half times the damage), green = GOOD, outside = MISS (no damage, extra tool wear).
  5. Every rock breaks in four stages (the I I I I marks over its name). Each stage drops its ore straight into your pockets, so you keep what you broke off even if you stop.
  6. Press X or walk away to stop. A broken rock grows back as a new (maybe different) ore within a few minutes.

Rocks come in Small, Medium and Large. Size only changes how long a rock takes; large rocks give more XP and a better chance of a gem. Rocks are shared - whoever breaks a stage gets that stage's ore.

Any rock can hide an uncut gem: Uncut Emerald, Uncut Ruby, Uncut Sapphire or the rare Uncut Diamond. Rocks marked · quartz can also drop Quartz Rock - the exchange has no use for it, but someone in the city might.

3

Safety gear

Without gear, a falling rock can hit your head or chips can get in your eyes (health loss, blurry screen). At Mining Supply → Safety gear press Put it on to rent a hard hat, goggles and vest. With it on mining never hurts you. Press Hand it back when you are done.

Repairs and upgrades

  1. Every hit wears your tool down (a miss wears it more). Watch the Tool bar or hover the tool in your inventory.
  2. Mining Supply → Repairs → Repair fixes it for cash.
  3. Mining Supply → Tools → Upgrade your tool. The tool keeps its slot, gets its new name and comes back at full durability.
ToolLevelOre per stageUpgrade price
Rusty Pickaxe11$350 (buy)
Iron Pickaxe21-2$600
Steel Pickaxe52$1,500
Reinforced Pickaxe102-3$3,500
Titanium Pickaxe183$7,500
Pneumatic Drill (Mining Drill)283-4$15,000
Mining Laser (Mining Laser)404-5$30,000

Better tools also swing faster, last longer and widen the green zone.

5

Hauling

Ore is heavy - too much stops you sprinting, and full pockets stop you mining. Mining Supply → Hauling:

  1. Wheelbarrow - rent it (deposit), press G to open it like a stash, E to push or put it down. Empty it and press Return to get the deposit back.
  2. Quarry truck - rent it (bigger deposit). A dump truck with a MINE plate appears at the truck parking with keys and fuel. Load the bed like a trunk. Park it back, empty it and press Return. A damaged truck returns less of the deposit.
6

Contracts

  1. Talk to the Quarry Foreman (E). The board shows up to three offers ("Deliver N x Copper") with a time limit, pay and XP. It changes every hour; some need a higher level.
  2. Press Take, then come back and press Deliver - you can deliver in parts.
  3. When it is full the pay goes to your bank with XP. Press Drop to give it up.
7

Crews

  1. /mining → Crew & contract → Start a crew (up to 4 players).
  2. Press Invite next to a nearby player; they open /mining and press Join.
  3. Crew mates nearby get a quarter of your XP when you break a rock, mining close together can drop extra ore, and the leader can take a foreman offer "For the crew" with split pay.
8

Blasting

  1. Get a blasting licence - ask a police officer, they grant it in their MDT. Your Mining book shows Blasting licence: Valid.
  2. At level 30, buy a Blasting Charge at Mining Supply → Blasting.
  3. Find the big boulder in the quarry and press E Place blasting charge.
  4. Get at least 30 m away, then press G to fire. A 20-second warning and siren go out to everyone nearby.
  5. Where the boulder stood you find several rich rocks that give double ore for a while. A new boulder appears some time later.

The blast hurts anyone standing close, including you and your friends.

Common problems

  • "You need a tool" when you walk up to a rock - buy the Rusty Pickaxe at Mining Supply first.
  • The pickaxe does nothing - you are outside the quarry. Tools only work inside Davis Quartz.
  • You can't start mining - your pockets are too heavy for more ore. Unload into a wheelbarrow or quarry truck.
  • An upgrade is locked - each tier needs a mining level. Check /mining for what you need.
  • The Blasting tab is locked - you need level 30 and a valid police blasting licence.
  • The detonator won't fire - you are closer than 30 m to the charge. Move away.
