Drugs Overview
How the drug trade works in Night City - from a hidden plant to cash on the corner, and what can go wrong.
Drugs in Night City are a full chain run by players, not a shop you click. Every step has its own risks:
- Find something to work with - a hidden weed patch, or a hidden mine with quartz and chemicals in it. Nobody hands you a map; tips come through the dark web.
- Grow and look after it - water, fertilizer and bugs decide how good your buds are. See Growing Weed.
- Process it at a hidden weed table - dry, grind, roll, bag and press. See Processing Weed.
- Sell it - hand-to-hand to locals, or bricks to a hidden bulk buyer. See Selling Drugs.
- Use it if you must - it relaxes you but leaves traces. See Smoking Weed.
Right now weed is the complete drug. Ketamine is being added in stages: you can already find its hidden mines and gather the raw ingredients. See Ketamine.
Everything here is illegal in character. Police can burn your plants, seize your tables, search you and charge you by the gram. Read Drug Enforcement so you know what you are up against.
Before you begin
- A
Darkweb Tablet in your pockets to read the tips that lead you to hidden spots (see The Darkweb).
- Tools and supplies for each step - every guide lists its own.
- Nothing else: no job or license. Any character can get into the trade.
Grade and purity
- Everything you make from weed remembers its strain and grade (C, B, A or S).
- Grade comes from how well the plant was looked after while the buds grew.
- Better grade means better street and bulk prices, and a stronger, longer high.
- Different strains and grades never stack together in your inventory, so you always know what you are holding.
- Grade also becomes a purity number. A
Purity Test Kit from the pharmacy shows the purity of a stack and warns you if it is contaminated.
Supplies pulled out of the trash (old weed bags, scales, syringes, vials, pill bottles) can be tainted. Bag weed with a tainted bag and the whole batch loses purity and becomes contaminated. Smoking contaminated product can make you ill a little later. Buy clean, or test before you sell.
Dealer level
- Every character has a dealer level from 1 to 10.
- You earn dealer XP from every street sale and bulk sale.
- A higher level means fewer refusals, slightly better prices, better haggling and fewer police calls from locals.
- You get a message when you level up: "Dealer level N - buyers trust you more".
Heat
- Every block of the city remembers how much dealing goes on there.
- Each sale heats up the block you are standing on. A hot block pays less and locals call the police more often.
- Heat cools down by itself over time - so move around instead of camping one corner.
Turf
Gangs can own territories. Dealing on someone else's turf alerts the owner gang; dealing on your own gang's turf pays better and alerts nobody. Gangs can also claim and padlock weed tables. See Gangs & Turf.
The tips that lead to hidden patches, tables, mines and the bulk buyer are written like street gossip: the kind of land, the area of the map, and in the end a landmark and a postal. Read them with the map open and watch the Tablet signal bars once you think you are close.
Costs & rewards
| Risk | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Police called on you | Street sales (more on hot corners and in rich areas), pushy haggling, bulk buys, breaking padlocks |
| Getting robbed | Locals sometimes grab the product and run - more often in poor areas |
| Rival gangs | Dealing on their turf, claiming or breaking into their tables |
| Losing your crop | Thirst, bugs, neglect, police burning it, someone else harvesting first |
| Getting sick | Tainted supplies and contaminated product |
| Charges | Police tally your grams after a search |
| Smell | Smoking leaves a smell where you stood and on you for a while |
The reward is cash - more for better grade, richer areas, cold corners and a higher dealer level.
Common problems
- I can't find any tips - you need a
Darkweb Tablet in your pockets. Just got one? Type
/dwhintsto see the newest open tips. - The tips stopped - someone found that spot first. A new one will be tipped later.
- My weed won't stack - different strains and grades are kept apart on purpose.
- Buyers keep saying no - your dealer level is low or the block is hot. Move a few blocks and keep selling to level up.
- I got sick after smoking - the product was contaminated by tainted supplies. Test with a
Purity Test Kit.
Thanks! Staff will look at it.
