Owning a Business

How to get a business, set up your office computer, place your spots and doors, open up and run the money.

Jobs & Businesses7 min read

Every player-run business in Night City - shops, gyms, clubs, pharmacies, garages and more - runs on the same system: an office computer where you manage everything, spots and doors you place yourself, staff you hire and a business bank balance.

This guide is for owners and managers. Hiring and pay have their own guide (Employees & Hiring), and each business type has its own page under Business guides.

Before you begin

  • Ownership of a business, or a boss rank in one. There are three ways to become an owner:
  • Win a bid war on nightcityrp.com/businesses (see below).
  • Buy one from its owner - they offer it to you, you accept, and staff review the sale.
  • Ask staff in Discord (discord.gg/nightcityrp) if you have a business idea.
  • Money in the business balance to pay staff and order supplies.

Winning a bid war

Every business with no owner is listed as For Sale on the website and has its own thread in the Discord channel #available-mlos. Bids are in real money (US dollars), and nothing is charged until you win.

  1. Log in on the website with Discord (join the server once first so it knows your characters).
  2. Open the business and press Start a bid war (or Place a bid). The lowest first bid is $75.00.
  3. The first bid starts a 7-day bid war. Each new bid must beat the current one by at least $5.00. You get a Discord DM if you are outbid.
  4. A bid in the last 10 minutes pushes the end back, so others can still answer it. Bids can't be taken back.
  5. When time runs out, the highest bidder has 48 hours to pay on the website (Your bids) and picks which character gets the business. If they don't pay, the next highest bidder gets the chance.
  6. Once paid, the business is handed to your character and you get a Discord DM.

Placing your office computer

  1. Go inside your building.
  2. Type /bizoffice. A floating "[E] Office computer goes here" text shows at your feet.
  3. Stand where the computer should be (a desk is ideal) and press E. Press Backspace to cancel.
  4. Walk up to it: it now says [E] Sign in.

You are reminded every time you log in until your first office computer is placed.

3

Signing in

  • Office computer: press E at [E] Sign in. While you are signed in, others see "In use by <your name>".
  • F7 tablet: press F7 anywhere (not while driving) to open the same menu with a tablet in your hands. Esc closes it. Police, EMS and DOJ use F7 for their own tablet instead.

The tablet is for managing. Physical things - the stock room, the register, work vehicles - still need you at the right spot.

Placing your spots

  1. Sign in → Locations. The left list shows every spot your business type can have.
  2. Press Place next to a spot. The menu closes.
  3. Walk to where it should be and press E. A floating "[E] ..." text appears there.
  4. To remove one, press the bin next to it on the Locations page.

RegisterWhere employees ring up customers

Every spot must be within about 80 m of one of your office computers, and you can have up to 6 of each kind.

5

Adding doors

  1. Locations → Doors → Add a door.
  2. Aim at the door until it gets an outline and the help says "Door found".
  3. Press E. Press G for a single door, or aim at the other half and press E again for a double door.
  4. On the Doors card you can switch Auto-lock on per door: it locks again once the person has gone through, or after about 10 seconds.

Every employee sees "[E] Lock door" / "[E] Unlock door" on business doors. Up to 16 doors per business.

6

Opening and closing

Press Open Business (top of the menu or Settings):

  • A city-wide announcement goes out (your own text; there is a short cooldown).
  • Your map blip shows. While closed it is greyed out or hidden - your choice.
  • All business doors unlock. Closing locks them all.
  • You are listed on the phone under Services, and NPC customer orders start coming in while staff are on duty.
7

Money and sales

  • Finances: deposit your own cash or withdraw. Every move is listed.
  • Register: an employee presses E at the register, picks products and charges a nearby customer. Items leave the stock room, money goes to the business.
  • Invoices: bill a nearby person; they pay from their phone.
  • NPC customers: orders pop up on the Orders tab while you're open with staff on duty. Serving one takes items from stock and pays the business.
  • Wholesaler: Stock page → sell products at the market price.
  • Supplies: order on the Orders tab (paid from the balance), then an employee does the delivery run in a van. Post requests on the supply board first - see Supplies & the Supply Board.
8

Prices and look

  • Settings → Prices: set your own price for every product. NPC customers never pay more than the normal price (plus a small tip).
  • Settings → Look: colours, font, tagline, logo / banner pictures (https links only) and your blip icon and colour.

No real brands or logos in your pictures or names. Staff remove anything that breaks the rules.

9

Selling your business

  1. Settings → Sell the business → Offer it to someone. Pick the buyer, price and a note.
  2. The buyer accepts the offer.
  3. Staff review the sale - nothing changes until they approve.
  4. On approval the money moves from the buyer's bank to yours, and the buyer becomes owner.

You can cancel a waiting sale at any time.

Costs & rewards

  • Bid wars start at $75.00 real money, in steps of $5.00.
  • Salaries are paid from the business balance every 15 minutes an employee is on duty - keep it topped up.
  • Your income: register sales, invoices, NPC orders and wholesale sales all go into the business balance.

Common problems

  • "Office computer goes here" won't appear - type /bizoffice inside your own building.
  • A spot or door can't be placed - it is more than about 80 m from an office computer, or you hit the limit for that spot.
  • "In use by ..." at the computer - someone else is signed in. Wait, or use the F7 tablet.
  • F7 does nothing - you are driving, or you are police / EMS / DOJ (F7 is your department tablet).
  • No NPC orders - you must be open with at least one employee on duty.
  • Employees aren't getting paid - the business balance is empty. Deposit money under Finances.
