Licenses

Every motor vehicle needs the right licence. You earn licences at the DMV by passing a written exam and a road test - the visit itself is in DMV & Driving Tests. All licence timers use real-life time: expiry dates, points and suspensions keep counting while you are offline.

Cars and motorcycles each have their own ladder of five classes, and the ladders are separate - a Class B car licence does not cover a Class B motorcycle. You climb one class at a time, and a licence covers its own class and every class below it:

ClassNameLets you drive
DEconomyClass D vehicles
CStandardClass C and D
BPerformanceClass B, C and D
ASportsClass A and below

A vehicle's class comes from its rating, see Vehicle Classes.

Before you begin

  • A learner's permit first, then the previous class on the ladder.
  • Time online (real hours) since your last step, and a clean record: no suspension and 3 points or fewer.

On a learner's permit you may drive Class D cars or motorcycles, but only with a licensed passenger whose licence covers that vehicle. Sitting in a vehicle your licence does not cover shows a warning; you can still drive it, but police can fine you, add points and tow it.

Checking and renewing

  • Use your Drivers License from your inventory to show your card: classes, expiry date and a red SUSPENDED stamp if suspended.
  • The DMV clerk's Licences tab is your checklist for the next class; the Record tab shows your points.
  • Licences expire after about two months. To renew, take a new photo at the DMV camera the same day, then clerk → Services → Renew. All your licences renew together.

Points and suspension

  • Police citations for driving offences add points. Each point drops off after about two weeks.
  • 12 points suspends your licence for about a week. While suspended you may not drive, take tests or renew; driving while suspended makes it longer.
  • Defensive driving course at the DMV removes 3 points, once every two weeks. See DMV & Driving Tests.
  • Driving record wipe: apply at the courthouse clerk desk; a judge decides. If approved, all points are cleared and a suspension lifted. See permits. Only a judge can give back a licence the court revoked.
