The Moretti Family
The Moretti family took over Los Santos in 1984, and the city became Night City.
For a family that shaped an entire city, remarkably little is known about them. The Morettis remain very secretive and unknown to most of the people who live in the city they built.

Who Leads the Family?
No one knows who leads the Moretti family. Most people assume there is a Godfather at the top, but no one has ever been able to say who.
Matron Moretti
The best-known Moretti in the city today is Matron Moretti, the owner of Bahama Mama's Club and Casino. See Matron Moretti.
Matteo Moretti
Matteo Moretti was the Matron's great-grandfather. He is no longer alive.
He is the Moretti most often linked to Mayor Lorenzo Romano. Some say they saw tension between the two men, though no one knows why. Others believed for a time that they shared an unbreakable friendship, and that belief is why most people never thought the Morettis had any connection to the mayor's assassination. Founding the City
When the Morettis established Night City, they destroyed the old Vinewood sign in the hills on April 1, 1984, and built the Night City sign in its place on June 1, 1984, to mark the start of the city.
Since then, the family has worked in the background to make sure Night City distinguishes itself from Los Santos. The visual changes to the Police, the Fire Department and the Medical Center came in 2015, and the change became official in 2026. The buildings themselves still say Los Santos, because replacing every sign in the city would cost billions. See Chapter 2: The Years Without a Mayor (1984-2026).
The First Election
Night City has never elected a mayor. The Moretti family is waiting to trigger the city's first election, the one that will set the tone of the city. They hope that whoever wins is willing to play their game.
Greywater County
Greywater County is technically separate from Night City, but the Morettis have been eyeing the territory. They have pressured the businesses there to pay Night City taxes and follow Night City laws. See Greywater County.
What People Say
Many speculate that the Moretti family has more power and influence than anyone realises. It is a common thing to hear in Night City, but it is not something anyone has ever been able to prove.
